Vermilion Flycatcher - Pyrocephalus obscurus flammeus Richard E. Webster 2019-04-09 Las Cienegas National Conservation Area (Empire Gulch), Pima County, Arizona, Pima (United States) (1400 m) dawn flight display with audible wingbeats, dawn song -

audible wingbeats at 2:49, 4:06, 5:45, and 7:35 (and 7:46?) as the bird changed perches, which were 1-2 m up inside dense, leafless mesquites, moving to the next perched (which were somewhat back and forth) with rapid flight and a few times some rapid short ups and downs in what was otherwise level flight; interval changed at 2:49; bird closest (songs loudest) at 4:53 to 5:45 and 6:56 to the end)

Vermilion Flycatcher - Pyrocephalus obscurus Scott Olmstead 2021-02-20 Evergreen Cemetery Tucson, Pima County, Arizona, Pima (United States) (700 m) adult, bill snaps, call, female, male -

'Peet' call and bill snapping from male, soft pipping trill from female. The pair was in close proximity and appeared to be prospecting potential nest sites in a mesquite. Recorded with iPhone 8 and Rode Videomic ME.

Vermilion Flycatcher - Pyrocephalus obscurus flammeus Richard E. Webster 2024-03-16 San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge, Cochise County, Arizona, Cochise (United States) (1100 m) call, bill snaps, audible wingbeats -

female calls; it had been interacting with a male a moment before; calling persistently 10-12 m up from perches in a cottonwood tree, calling with flicks of wings and bobs of tail; I was not aware of them at the time, but there seem to be some bill snaps before a few calls after 0:10 to 0:31; I was aware at the time of the audible wingbeats used after 1:17 as she moved; overall impression that all of this is part of 'important' interactions with the male; I seldom hear females call;

Vermilion Flycatcher - Pyrocephalus obscurus flammeus Richard E. Webster 2024-05-01 Guadalupe Canyon, Peloncillo Mountains, Cochise County, Arizona, Cochise (United States) (1300 m) dawn song, audible wingbeats -

not seen, but at close range; the first four seconds have audible wingbeats of a display flight, less filtered, presumed, followed by perched dawn song from fairly close range in a small tree; interval shortened at 2:40 for a long cut from a scrubby slope, from which two partial annotations were removed; there is another flight display with bursts of audible wingbeats after 11:40, during which the bird flew very close to me but I did not see it, but this may be the loudest recording of the wingbeats I have, again not filtered at lower frequencies that overlap; some messy moments because it still quite dark and I am trying to see the bird and I'm not always sure of the best angle for the microphone and I'm just sloppy!; some moderate gaps without songs; versus diurnal flight songs, no bill snaps;

Vermilion Flycatcher - Pyrocephalus obscurus flammeus Richard E. Webster 2016-06-26 Rodeo, Hidalgo County, New Mexico, Hidalgo (United States) (1200 m) dawn flight display with audible wingbeats, dawn song -

audible exaggerated wingbeats in direct flight 1-2 m up between song perches, e.g., at 1:03, 2:41, 5:41, 6:01 with bill snap, 6:09, 6:35, 7:40-7:43; still singing at end but farther away; probably same bird as recorded earlier this month; I moved 4 or 5 times trying to keep up with it

Vermilion Flycatcher - Pyrocephalus obscurus flammeus Richard E. Webster 2023-06-24 San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge, Cochise County, Arizona, Cochise (United States) (1100 m) flight song -

a series of attempts to get complete flight songs from an adult male that was giving them regularly, but moving widely between them, as I tried to keep up and figure out where it was; first one is a fragment, just the end; interval shortened at 0:08, nearly complete flight song from which I could hear nothing, even though it came fairly close while doing a couple broad, level loops, about 10 m up, landing on a stick; interval shortened at 0:23, complete flight song that completed out of sight on top of the 12 m cottonwood under which I was standing (but it had stopped singing by then), a call note at the start; shortened at 0:40 for a nearly complete flight song; shortened at 0:54 for a complete flight song, a fairly level loop from one cottonwood perch to another; shortened at 1:11, a fragment because I was still walking, trying to get closer, and still at medium distance; shortened at 1:22, a very short one, I couldn't tell at the time if it sang, but can now see two faint songs; many songs, especially early on, ended with a bill snap; in general, a rather open area with several 12-25 m cottonwoods, 20 m ones nearby, but mostly low ground cover with a few scattered mesquites and brush piles; songs always ended at a different perch than from which they started. a couple started from 2-3 m up on brush piles, but most started with high perches on taller cottonwoods;
