New Zealand Rockwren - Xenicus gilviventris Dan Lane 2014-11-25 near Homer Tunnel, South Island, New Zealand, Southland District (New Zealand) (900 m) call -

The very high-pitched 'ti' notes are natural vocalizations from a probable male that was hopping about inside stunted vegetation amid boulders, mostly within 1m of the mic, but out of sight. It was near a nest, and probably foraging to feed young. Light rain and waterfall sounds competing, and so I filtered below about 4000 Hz.

New Zealand Rockwren - Xenicus gilviventris David Lloyd-Jones 2014-03-29 Arthur's Pass National Park (near Arthur's Pass), Selwyn District, Canterbury, Westland District (New Zealand) (1000 m) call, male -

This male rock wren was recorded near a fast flowing alpine stream while feeding on mayflies. Recording distance 3-4 m. Although not obvious in this recording (due to mp3 truncation at 20 kHz), both the male and female had ultrasonic harmonic components to these calls reaching up to 23 kHz. This finding has been published: Lloyd-Jones, D.J. 2014. Ultrasonic harmonics in the calls of rock wren (Xenicus gilviventris). Notornis 61,165-169. Wing-flicking behaviour was observed to be associated with the calls.
