Observed 2 Red-legged Crakes later in the morning near the hills in very thick undergrowth. There were very, very close to me but not visible (one seen briefly in flight). They were calling out to each other (responsive calls) using a variety of call types. A number of audio recordings of calls between the 2 birds.

calling from undergrowth in secondary forest - further from water (>200m) than I have previously encountered one.

2 birds calling to each other about 6m apart either side of the boardwalk at the edge of the lake. The first bird heard is making the standard 'gogogogok' call. The second bird responds with a low-pitched unbird-like call similar to a sharp exhalation of breath which I have not heard before. This call and response continues for about 3 minutes before the second bird stops calling. The first bird continues with the 'gogogogok' before a short period of silence then makes a strong growling 'girrrrrr' call at 3:23 which is immediately followed by the second bird making the same call but louder and at a higher pitch. After that calling stopped. The birds were gradually moving towards each other but I was unable to observe if they met up as it was too dark. Perhaps this is a male-female encounter? (There are some sharp changes in volume in the recording as I turned the microphone through 180-degrees to focus on each bird in turn)

Calling from among ferns; recording taken along footpath, approximately 5 m or less from source. About 1 second after recording was stopped, the bird made the 'grriiirrrr' call.
