First documented record for Ecuador. Adult male, seemingly territorial, on a young river island, just within Ecuadorian territory and right at the border with Peru. Observed together with Jiovanny Rivadeneira, Lazar Brinkhuizen, Alwin van Lubeck & Andre-Willem Faber. Very similar-looking Slate-colored Seedeater excluded principally by song, but also by plumage, behavior, and habitat. I discovered the bird in the afternoon of the 8th as its song caught my attention. A very brief view of a seedeater spec perched in a tree top raised immediate excitement because what I saw did not fit any of the expected Sporophila species. The following morning, we successfully relocated the bird in the same spot where it vigorously responded to tape playback. We were able to record its song and call, and also get good photo and video documentation. Interestingly, the general area in this part of Amazonia is rather pristine, and one would rather expect the occurrence/expansion of Grey Seedeater to take place in heavily deforested areas (connecting habitats with Colombian populations). The location of this bird was therefore rather unexpected. Given the extremely close proximity to Peru (< 100m), this record could be regarded as a new species to both Ecuador and Peru.
