Wood Duck - Aix sponsa | Russ Wigh | 2017-02-26 | Skidaway Island, Chatham County, GA USA, Chatham (United States) (2 m) | call - At times, in this particular location of fresh water ponds this species can be quite common. The pools will dry up in drought periods and the birds are obviously not there. I have counted as many as 55 individuals in three ponds during wet winters. They are skittish and notoriously hard to get close to, taking flight very easily. Two birds seemed undisturbed as I slowed my vehicle to a stop. I was able to get out and work my way to the water's edge before they took off, which allowed me to get their fading calls, which for all the world sounds like they are in dire straits. bird-seen:yes playback-used:no
