Crithagra gularis (Smith, A 1836)

The streaky-headed seedeater or streaky-headed canary is a small passerine bird in the finch family. It is an unobtrusive but widespread species in suitable habitats of southern Africa. Its presence in an area is revealed foremost by its callnotes. Source: Wikipedia

Protonym:
  Linaria gularis

Type locality:
  'Inhabits the colony [i.e. Cape Colony] and country as far as Latakoo.' Restricted to Latakoo, near Kuruman, Bechuanaland (i.e. northern Cape Province), by W. L. Sclater and Mackworth-Praed, 1918, Ibis, p. 468. Subsequent restriction to Grahamstown, eastern Cape Province, by Clancey, 1966, Durban Mus. Novit., 7, p. 611, is not accepted.

  • Crithagra gularis: patchy in lowland to submontane scrub, savanna and miombo, and Fynbos from central Angola and northeastern Namibia eastward to northwestern Mozambique, then southward through Zimbabwe and northeast Botswana to eastern and southern South Africa, avoiding Namib and Kalahari deserts; partially migratory in non-breeding season
  • Crithagra gularis gularis: southeastern Botswana and northern South Africa
  • Crithagra gularis benguellensis: highlands of central Angola to western Zambia
  • Crithagra gularis mendosa: northeastern Botswana to western Zimbabwe and adjacent highland Mozambique
  • Crithagra gularis endemion: eastern South Africa (Mpumalanga to central Free State and KwaZulu-Natal), Lesotho, Eswatini, and southern Mozambique
  • Crithagra gularis humilis: southern South Africa (Western Cape and Eastern Cape)
  • Crithagra canicapilla montanorum: highlands of eastern Nigeria and western Cameroon
  • Crithagra canicapilla elgonensis: northwestern Central African Republic and adjacent southern Chad, South Sudan, northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, northern Uganda, and far western Kenya
