Linnets are social by nature. When a group is encountered at the start of the breeding season there is bound to be a mixture of twittering, song and flight calls (because Linnets are restless by nature and startle easily). Around ten birds were present for this recording and throughout the first 15 seconds the trademark short twitter is repeated several times. The notes are uniform and 'flat' (they do not rise or fall) and in my mind suggest a squeak that needs oiling. At 0:18 some of the group startle and produce the typical Linnet hubbub of fast twitters, an effect created because several birds call. Not all in the flock flew off and the remainder of the clip features calls that are not connected to any kind of alarm. A standard sound that functions as a kind of 'flag of identification' is the twanging 'coo-ee' note given at 0:23 and 0:29. At no stage was I able to see which individuals made which sound. From about 40 seconds onwards, two vocalists might have been of the opposite sex. I hope to work this out at a future date. Even if a male and female were involved, I do not know who said what! Nonetheless, a conversation seems to be conducted. At 0:43 a fairly gruff call draws the sweeter 'coo-ee' response at 0:46. Although this is the same note as at 0:23, the utterance comes across as more of a whimper. Perhaps the caller moved to a perch slightly further away or turned its head, thereby reducing the volume and impact of the call. The same two birds continue prolong the same exchange at 0:49 (reply at 0:51), 0:52 (reply at 0:55) and 1:00 (reply at 1:01). Skylark song can be heard throughout the recording. At 0:16 a Skylark flies overhead and utters (fairly faint) a typically burry flight call. Several examples of a high-pitched, almost ultra-sonic, whine occur through the recording, such as at 0:16 (just before Skylark flight call). I assume the sound is made by a Robin. A Meadow Pipit begins its descending song flight at 0:59 and the repeated 'sip, sip, sip' syllables can be heard, albeit not very clearly, right to the end of the clip.
