Geographic range:

  • Hydrobates leucorhous: breeds northeastern Atlantic from southern Iceland, Faroe Islands, central Norway, Ireland, and Scotland; northwestern Atlantic from southern Labrador to Massachusetts; northwestern Pacific from northeastern Russia and northeastern Japan to Alaska and northern and central Baja California (northwestern Mexico); also off southwestern Africa; non-breeders range to tropical Pacific Ocean mainly north of Tropic of Capricorn, and tropical Atlantic, reaching southern Africa in temperate southeastern Atlantic Ocean
  • Hydrobates leucorhous leucorhous: breeds in the North Pacific, from northeastern Japan through the Kuril and Aleutian islands to southeastern Alaska, southward to central California (Farallon Islands); and in the North Atlantic from the northeastern USA (Massachusetts, Maine) and eastern Canada eastward to Iceland, the Faroe Islands, northern Scotland, and northwestern Norway; very small population also breeding (since 1995) on Dyer and Dassen Islands (Western Cape, South Africa; still extant?), and unsuccessful nesting attempted on Chatham Islands, New Zealand. winters primarily in central and eastern Pacific, southward to 27°S, and in the tropical Atlantic, especially in waters off West Africa, but southward to northeastern Brazil and South Africa
  • Hydrobates leucorhous chapmani: Coronado and San Benito islands (northwestern Mexico)
  • Hydrobates socorroensis: summer breeder on islets off Guadalupe Island (western Mexico); ranges in eastern Pacific north to southern California and southward to ca. 10°N
  • Hydrobates cheimomnestes: winter breeder on islets off Guadalupe Island (western Mexico); nonbreeding range poorly known, but apparently disperses south in eastern Pacific, at least as far as the Galapagos
  • Hydrobates monorhis: breeds islands off Japan; disperses to northern Indian Ocean
