I presume the bird was a male, by virtue of its vigourous song. To be honest, I hardly looked at the bird to try to determine its sex, rather I concentrated on trying to get recordings in difficult circumstances, with much background noise. At first the bird was attracted by playback by another person, but once the birding group had left I stayed back and waited and the bird returned and started to sing again. Not a woodpecker, but still very satisfying. One of the most range restricted and rarest birds in the world in fact! Recording not edited in any way.

Bird first heard singing on other side of channel, briefly came across channel to bund we were standing on, then went back over channel again, singing intermittently throughout; this recording is from when bird came to our side of the channel. Guide used recording to bring bird in. In reedbed and undergrowth to eye-height in bushes. Filtered to remove very low/high frequency noise, primarily wind.

This is an unmodified recording taken of an individual relatively deep within a 1.8 m woody shrub (singing from about 1.7 m up), surrounded by swamp grasses, other woody shrubs and areas of open water. The individual was seen while recording, and continued singing after we left the area, which was approximately after 15 minutes.
