Chaco Owl - Strix chacoensis Natxo Areta 2013-07-20 Reserva Natural Formosa, Formosa, Argentina, Formosa (Argentina)   - Response to playback of Strix chacoensis, but we also played back Strix rufipes and S. hylophila before the bird appeared. Two birds showed up, one of them vocalized more intensely and the second one accompanied twice (with different vocalizations). The bird singing more intensely was photographed in flight and perched. Photos taken this night could belong either to this bird or the second one. 212819

Same Chaco Owl as XC391607 but 10 minutes later when it called again. It is sitting 8 meters high in medium-sized tree in Reserva Natural Formosa, 25 meters off gravel road south of Ingeneiro Juarez. Owl is about 10 meters distant from path. After first two calls, a second Owl calls three times from a more distant location, probably 20 to 30 meters away.

Distance to mic. 12m (nearest individual, probably male). Natural songs of both members of pair, with presumed female (deeper song) getting progressively closer during course of cut. Both sexes start with 'short songs', then near end of cut sing 'long songs'.

Chaco Owl - Strix chacoensis Natxo Areta 2013-07-20 Reserva Natural Formosa, Formosa, Argentina, Formosa (Argentina)   - A bird vocalizing naturally. Before this song, it uttered the 'RRRU!' calls. This was the first individual that I heard making this special call. 212812

Chaco Owl - Strix chacoensis Natxo Areta 2013-08-24 Reserva Natural Formosa, Formosa, Argentina, Formosa (Argentina)   - Male based on the lower pitched and slower (ie, fewer pulses per note) calls. In the darkness, the female flew above us and went far away, a few seconds late the male responded vocalizing. A single note in the second cut may belong to this species - it made slightly different renditions of it and I got to record only one. 212911
