  • Zimmerius improbus improbus: Andes of northwestern Venezuela (eastern Táchira to Trujillo)
  • Zimmerius improbus tamae: northern Colombia and northwestern Venezuela, in the Santa Marta Mountains, the Sierra de Perijá , and the Tamá massif; the population in the Santa Martas and the Perijá may be an undescribed subspecies, distinct from "true" tamae of the Tamá region in Norte de Santander, Colombia and immediately adjacent Táchira, Venezuela
