Carolina Wren - Thryothorus ludovicianus ludovicianus Russ Wigh 2016-06-30 Skidaway Island, Chatham County, GA USA, Chatham (United States) (5 m) begging call, call -

On 5 of 8 days I sneaked a tiny microphone into a hanging basket on my deck where Carolina Wrens had built a nest. I was going to add a sixth day, but they fledged! Throughout the recording you can hear the nestlings rustling around in the leaves and pine straw of the nest. On day 1 they emit a begging call consistently, even without the presence of a parent. Thereafter they remain quiet until the parent signals his or her approach with a single chip note. Each day the begging of two chicks increases in volume. This particularly noticeable in the last segment. There will be a fade of 3 to 5 seconds between days.

One of my favorite wren recordings, continues to fascinate me. First a very close male starts singing one song type twice, then switches to another song type. Then a farther-away male starts to sing type II exactly as did the closer male. Then the close male starts singing song type II again, while the farther male starts singing song type I. Then 'cheer' alarm calls start from farther away, while the close male is still singing song type II. I suspect it is the farther male. At the end, the close male throws in a third type.
