Unmodified, “small talk”, calls of unknown function by an adult, likely female, Golden Eagle in the nest, close to or during egglaying, starting like “small-talk” in XC837111 (updated) and going over into a “soft clucking” call like in XC837088 (updated) and XC837110 (updated); presumably this type of calls can only be heard at short distance. Golden Eagle - Aquila chrysaetos japonica Morioka Zoological Park ZOOMO 2022-03-04 Morioka Zoological Park ZOOMO, Iwate Prefecture, Morioka (Japan) (260 m) adult, call, female, zoo collection -

Although this is a zoo bird, I share the data since high-quality recordings of this species are rare. Uploaded by permission of the zoo. The original video is at https://twitter.com/moriokazoo/status/1500419417645199361?cxt=HHwWgsC5rdjgx9IpAAAA. The bird is currently incubating the eggs. This recording was made while taking a rest. The low voice reminds me of Haliaeetus pelagicus.

Golden Eagle - Aquila chrysaetos Birger Hörnfeldt 2023-04-18 Vindeln, Vindeln Municipality, Västerbottens län, Vindeln (Sweden) (170 m) a “clucking-like call” -

An unmodified, “soft”, “clucking-like call” of unknown function, similar to the one in XCxxxxxx (to be updated), from an adult of unknown sex. This call is of shorter duration than the “clucking calls” in XC837088, XC837104, XC837110, XC837112, and XC837157. Likewise, this type of “clucking-like call” can probably only be heard at short distance, too. Recording from the assumed incubation period. Territory code: Vin99AC; coordinates given are not for that site but for the center of Vindeln in Vindeln municipality. The recording was made within approx. 500 m from the nest, with quite open terrain all way between; recorder being deployed in October 2022 with delayed start date until 11 March 2023. Habitat: hillside with coniferous forest of spruce (Picea abies) and pine (Pinus sylvestris), altidude: approx. 280-290 m asl.

Although this is a zoo bird, I share the data since this type of call would be difficult to record in the wild. The bird (23 years old, same individual as in XC710018). The voice was extracted from the video at https://twitter.com/moriokazoo/status/1567817143445504005. Stronger notes after 0:46 were similar to the voice in the wild.

Golden Eagle - Aquila chrysaetos Birger Hörnfeldt 2023-04-25 Vindeln, Vindeln Municipality, Västerbottens län, Vindeln (Sweden) (170 m) begging call -

A series of unmodified adult, a bit “sucking“, begging calls, likely from the female (for argument see XC825207; see also XCxxxxxx, to be updated). Begging calls like this were frequently recorded at this territory from late March into April during the assumed laying and incubation period. Although begging calls are more likely to be heared from females (cf. XC825207), males probably have similar begging calls.
