I've recorded this song before at Yankuam, in a similar nutrient-poor soil forest, back in 2010, and finally, I was able to reconnect with this 'mystery' taxon and got recordings of song, excitement calls, and trill call. For sure visually much like a Zimmer's (Yellow-margined) Flatbill type, but song and calls very different from Ecuador's lowland race obscuriceps. Vocalizations approach subspecies clarus from C Peru better. No doubt this is a new taxon to Ecuador, and perhaps with further work on Tolmomyias assimilis-complex, even split worthy.
