  • Glaucidium capense: disjunctly in lowland and foothill woodland, riparian and coastal forest, and edge habitat in open country, from Liberia and Ivory Coast eastward to Benin, northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and western Uganda, and from southern Somalia southward through coastal Kenya, southern and eastern Tanzania and Mafia Island, and Zambia to northern Namibia and northeastern South Africa, and of south-central South Africa
  • Glaucidium capense capense: southern Mozambique to KwaZulu-Natal and eastern Cape Province
  • Glaucidium capense castaneum: northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (Semliki Valley) and southwestern Uganda (Bwamba Forest); records from southern Cameroon, southwestern Central African Republic, and Congo may refer to this subspecies
  • Glaucidium capense etchecopari: patchily distributed in Liberia and Ivory Coast
  • Glaucidium capense ngamiense: eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo to central Tanzania (including Mafia Island), southward to Angola, northern Namibia, northern Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique
  • Glaucidium capense scheffleri: far southern coastal Somalia, eastern Kenya, and northeastern Tanzania
  • Glaucidium albertinum: poorly known; reported from eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (Itombwe Mountains and forest west of Lake Edward) and northern Rwanda
