Violet-green Swallow - Tachycineta thalassina | Elias Aristides Elias | 2015-07-07 | Arcata, Humboldt County, California, Humboldt (United States) (0 m) | alarm call - This 1+ minute recording documents a flock of swallow swarming me. The primary vocalist was an adult female Violet-green Swallow. Also present was an adult male Violet-green Swallow and an adult Barn Swallow (sex not determined). Other swallows were present but were not focused on. The female was protecting a juvenal swallow perched on the nest box. This juvenal appears to be the youngest of the clutch and was still hanging around the nest. These parent were attempting to drive me away. The recording begins with a volley of notes from the female and she each time she approaches me throughout the recording she is stooping on me. She also spends some time just circling me and giving single more spaced calls. At 0:17 the male make a two phrase scratchy vocalization at the bottom of a dive directed at me. At 0:44 a Barn Swallow begins to make noise. At 0:48 a Barn Sallow begins to chase an adult Common Raven. The Birds of North America account says this about the alarm call: “Alarm” call. No published description, but apparent alarm calls recorded by D. J. Borror in El Paso Co., CO, are shown in Fig. 3 . Also a “zwrack” call, similar to that of Purple Martin (Progne subis), used in high-intensity alarm situations (Brown 1983). Additional details regarding context may be found at: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S24178105 This recording was made with an iPhone 4s with Sennheiser microphone and Røde Rec application. bird-seen:yes playback-used:no
