| Sharp-tailed Grouse - Tympanuchus phasianellus | Valerie Heemstra | 2025-10-15 | Seney NWR, Schoolcraft, Michigan, Schoolcraft (United States) (220 m) | call, Several kinds of chuckles, other calls - Long recording, originally 17 minutes, made with handheld mic while standing as motionless as possible of at least six well-seen grouse in quiet prairie from 50-100 m away. Initially flushed from ground to treetops, and then returned to ground. Recording is in three sections with two 1-sec silent breaks; vocalizations increase in amplitude, the last section has the loudest and most varied calls. Lapland Longspurs are loudest in the second section, and the grouse are quiet when the longspurs call as if they are listening. The silent breaks are where few calls were made and several minutes were cut. Recordist was wearing an orange hat (hunting season). Prairie had tall conifers at the edge, and this is where the birds flew to when flushed. Temp. about 46 F, increased to 50 F. Bright sun and overcast sky gave way to blue. Wind calm.
