Bird heard at short range in dense short reeds. Moved silently and relatively quickly through the reeds. No possibility of seeing it. High pass and normalise filters were used to improve the recording.

Overcast and 11° with intermittent lite drizzle. Bird was close to recordists but remained concealed in dense reeds. 'krek' 'krek' call was heard for some time with short silent intervals before call started again. While bird was calling it remained in one location and did not move away. During the call interval bird seemed to move a short distance as the next sequence of call was heard a few feet from the previous call.

2 birds calling on opposite sides of the track. The 'usual' call stopped before I could get taping, this appeared to be the response from the other side.

Recorded on the track to The Hide using a double pair of Primo EM172 capsules in a SASS style array and a Sony PCM-M10 recorder. Temperature 15 degrees, almost no wind. Background hum is from freeway and possibly waves and boats.

The birds happened to be calling very close by from saltmarsh during an ambient recording. The first calls are like exaggerated versions of the normally barely audible intake of breath during the more usual grunting call heard at 0:17.

There are at least two birds calling, possibly three.

Initially called without provocation, other than perhaps responding to some pseudophryne bibronii calls I was playing. Then I used a bit of playback to encourage more calling prior to recording. Birds were very close, one in particular. One crossed the path a few moments afterwards
