Australian White Ibis - Threskiornis molucca Khristos Nizamis 2022-03-03 Meningie West, Coorong District Council, South Australia, The Coorong (Australia) (10 m) call, life stage uncertain, sex uncertain -

This sample, along with four other samples also uploaded to Xeno-Canto, is taken from an overnight recording made at a location 350 metres inland (at the nearest point) from the shore of the Coorong, within a protected area called Potters Scrub. The microphones were set up directly beneath a stand of old pine trees where a fairly large group of what are certainly water birds of some kind roost at night. The birds had only been seen on a previous occasion at night, silhouetted against the night sky, after the recordist had inadvertently disturbed them, and several of them vocally took flight. Against the night sky, they appeared about the size of Grey-headed Flying Foxes, with wide wingspans and broad wings. They did not seem to have long necks, but this observation is uncertain, under the circumstances. In any case, by trying to match their calls against other recordings of species that are native to the Coorong region, no definitive outcome could be attained. Technical note: Given the signature 'Coorong roar' (the very loud, incessant low-frequency roar of the ocean on the far side of the sand dunes that enclose the Coorong waters), the following EQ settings have been used to clarify the frequency range of the bird calls: Baxandall Low Shelf -20.1 dB at 311 Hz. Bell curve +2.5 dB at 1973 Hz.

Update: I have provisionally accepted Marc Anderson's highly plausible suggestion that these are White-necked Herons (Ardea pacifica).

After an unattended overnight recording made in this same location on 2022.03.03, excerpts from which were previously uploaded to Xeno-Canto, I returned to the location on 2022.03.12-13 in order to make a visual observation of the birds, photograph them, and make further sound recordings. Weather conditions were slightly less conducive to audio recording on the later date, with variable breeze through the pines, and with the sound of the Coorong shoreline much louder than during the previous recording. But the main purpose was to get a definite visual identification of the birds, and a sound recording clear enough to establish that the birds of 2022.03.12-13 were without any doubt the same as those of 2022.03.03. Both of those ends, at least, were achieved.

[Technical note: To mitigate the low-frequency 'Coorong roar' and bring the bird calls into slightly better resolution, the following EQ was used: Baxandall low shelf filter -13.0 dB at 555 Hz. Bell filter +5.3 dB.]
