Possible defensive behaviour to protect (unseen) young. Bird in irrigation channel, would fly towards recording source and subsequently swim away while calling. Pattern repeated until observer left.

Habitat

Flat agricultural fields in Mississippi alluvial plain. Most fields wet with standing water and some flooded with a few inches of water.
