White-plumed Antbird - Pithys albifrons Cameron Rutt 2018-07-01 Cabo Frio camp -- Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project, Amazonas (Brazil) (130 m) call -

This bird was recorded calling from a primary forest plot at the BDFFP (the TEAM plot), in the presence of a massive swarm of ants that are descending from a canopy tree, which contains the remnants of their bivouac (~15-18 m up). Most of the calls are these descending 'jeer' calls (a couple of the best examples at the 0:49 mark). There is, however, another obligate army-ant follower in the background that can be heard giving sharp, staccato alarm calls (0:35), but I'm not sure if this is P. albifrons or G. rufigula, though I suspect the latter. Aside from normalizing, the recording was unaltered. This recording is also archived at the Macaulay Library (ML241273041).

Agitated response to playback (to 'song' on John Moore recordings); part of a group of antbirds attending an unseen ant swarm. This was an adult that circled us a couple of times, remaining about <2m in terra firme forest near a lower, wetter area (where the ants appeared to be). Also attending the swarm was Phlegopsis nigromaculata and Gymnopithys leucaspis. Both the 'tchew!' and the 'heeer' are from the Pithys. Just as a mist was falling from a very overcast sky.
