| Mississippi Kite - Ictinia mississippiensis | Andrew Spencer | 2020-08-16 | Cottonwood Canyon at 37.11489, -103.07882, Baca, Colorado, United States, Baca (United States) | - Calls from both an adult bird and at least one juvenile high in a cottonwood grove, by a nest. The adult bird is giving a slightly clearer version of the call, while the juvenile's call is a bit raspier. Several feeding events, including at least one where there may have been an unseen second juvenile begging (or at least so it sounds). | 256194501 macaulaylibrary.org |
| Mississippi Kite - Ictinia mississippiensis | J.R. Rigby | 2016-05-13 | Oxford, Lafayette County, Mississippi, Lafayette (United States) (130 m) | call, copulatory call - Natural sound. Female vocalized 'phee-ti-ti' call followed by the male's approach. Male immediately landed on on the female and engaged in copulation. Quieter calls continued throughout the copulatory encounter. The male then flew off and a few moments later returned and perched on a nearby branch. After this the birds preened and were silent for twenty minutes, the remaining duration of my observation. This was the second copulation I observed (see XC316337) and third approach of the male to the female (also XC316338). HabitatLight urban lawn adjoining a forest fragment with some large mixed oak-hickory trees. EditingEdited in Adobe Audition. Butterworth high-pass filter, order 3, cutoff frequency 2kHz EquipmentFostex FR-2 digital recorder with Sennheiser microphone and Telinga pro 22' parabolic reflector. bird-seen:yes playback-used:no

| Mississippi Kite - Ictinia mississippiensis | Russ Wigh | 2016-07-05 | Skidaway Island, Chatham County, GA USA, Chatham (United States) (0 m) | call - One individual was perched in a tall loblolly pine tree, and another hovered in the air above. It appeared the perched bird, likely a juvenile, was the only one vocalizing. Toward the end of this file the call changes to what one might assume is a juvenile call to a parent birds. The perched bird was still there 3 hours later alternately flying and roosting in one of two pine trees. This recording was made with a Sound Devices 722 with a Sennheiser ME67 microphone. The microphone has low-cut filter turned on. The only alteration other than the removal of human artifacts, is noise reduction in Audacity, which performed well with only one pass. I have previously recorded this species here. The other is an abysmal recording which I would happily dispose. bird-seen:yes playback-used:no

| Mississippi Kite - Ictinia mississippiensis | J.R. Rigby | 2016-05-13 | Oxford, Lafayette County, Mississippi, Lafayette (United States) (130 m) | call, courtship - Natural sound. Female vocalized 'Phee-ti-ti call' as the male approached. Not clear whether he responded to the call or she responded to his approach. Softer vocalizations seemed to be the male's response as he approached the tree. Male landed on a nearby branch as if to offer a food item, but no item was exchanged. The male departed and was seen hunting in the area sometimes circling low overhead of the female. A few minutes earlier the birds had copulated (see XC316337). The date is getting late in the season for the species here. Fifth of 8 recordings made. Bird calling in agitation to a juv Red-tailed hawk perched near the top of a dead sycamore. In this recording, the kite left it's concealed perch in the top of a tall, bushy pecan and made six passes at the hawk in side-to-side swinging fashion, nearly touching it each time. The hawk appeared unfazed by this first encounter. The kite returned to the top of the pecan and resumed calling. Urban. Natural. No playback. bird-seen:yes playback-used:no

| Mississippi Kite - Ictinia mississippiensis | Russ Wigh | 2017-07-26 | Skidaway Island, Chatham County, GA USA, Chatham (United States) (5 m) | call - I have had one or more Mississippi Kites roosting or nesting in a large Loblolly Pine on my property all summer. Last year one was there as well. Recently I have seen two. They vocalize regularly, but they are so well hidden it has been difficult for me to point a microphone at them. Furthermore I have not been able to see a nest. They circle the roost/nest no more than 300-400 meters from it. Since migration for this species is only a few weeks away (mid-August) I am assuming that one of these is a hatch-year bird. This one note call is something I do not remember hearing in the past, but I hesitate to ascribe it to a juvenile bird. A note about the recording I pointed a 24 inch aluminum parabolic microphone in the approximate direction of the birds. The The pick-up is a very small Senal CL-6 omni lapel microphone suspended inside a plastic tube drilled out as an interference tube. I built the unit to use for night migrants from the roof of my house. Directed at the sky it works well. directed elsewhere it picks up background ambient 'noise' and carries a metallic signature. Consequently this recording needed to be cleaned up. The intervals between vocalizations are intact, but I needed to employ equalization by reducing everything 500 and 5K hertz, and then a judicious amount of noise reduction. bird-seen:yes playback-used:no
