Whooping Crane - Grus americana John Patterson 2020-10-02 Marcelin area, North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada, North Battleford (Canada)   - This pair is among the 100+ Whooping Cranes that have stopped in central Saskatchewan for several weeks on their fall migration from northern Canada. They were recorded (audio and video) from a seldom-traveled road using the vehicle as a blind. The birds were seen from a distance, walking slowly, parallel to the road and about 150m from it while foraging in a harvested field. I was able to drive down the road unseen while they were behind a ridge and wait for them to appear. Audio recording began when they emerged from behind the ridge. The first three vocalizations (single calls) are widely separated at 0:03, 0:39 and 2:22. A more distant pair of Whooping Cranes is heard at 3:11 to 3:24 and elicits a response from both birds of the primary pair at 3:30. From 3:30 to 7:58 both birds of the primary pair vocalize more frequently and with increasing complexity. Recording continued for two minutes after the vocalization at 7:58, but nothing further was heard. The pair continued to forage for a further 20 minutes and then flew off. 267590321

Whooping Crane - Grus americana J. Frank Goodwin 2016-08-02 Gainesville, Alachua County, Florida, Alachua (United States) (20 m) call, female -

This ten-year old female (a familiar individual in this area, identified by blue leg band) vocalized for a brief period this morning just off the 'La Chua' trail at the north end of Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park near Gainesville, Florida. For about fifteen minutes I observed her foraging in the puddles and mud of the shallow open wetland roughly 200 meters northwest of the trail's observation platform.

She is known to be one of only a few Florida-born Whooping cranes within a small non-migratory population in the state. She hatched in 2006 in Lake County, which lies a bit to the south of this location. Her parents were captive reared cranes released in central Florida in the 1990s.

The bird did not appear to be responding to other sounds, although a pair of Florida Sandhill Cranes were also vocalizing in the near vicinity (not, however, at the same time).

The temperature at the time was in the (normal) range of low-80s F, but cloud cover was notably heavier for that time of morning than it has been in recent days.

The recording was made on a two-channel Sony PCM-M10, then trimmed and reduced to single channel with a two-second fade in/out. No other modifications were made.
