For the better part of two weeks and continuously throughout the day and night, a male and female Barred Owl were seen and heard frequently. If unfamiliar, the female has the higher pitched call. From what I understand these are descendants of other Barred Owls that have been on Samish Island for some time. This is actually a remarkable duet to hear and of course to experience.

It was just before 5:30 pm when this recording was made on a Zoom H4N. It was hand held with the cone handle in place. This is a mature wooded area.

was aware of this location from last October 2016. Sure enough I found the male and female (has the higher bark of the two) performing their infamous duet back and forth calling on Point Williams Road on Samish Island Washington. You can hear the female take off first as the male continues to call then the male takes off.

the GPS coordinates are accurate from maps.google.com however this site incorrectly shows another location in another state

Northern Barred Owl - Strix varia Susan Hochgraf 2015-05-14 Trail Wood Sanctuary, Hampton, Windham County, Connecticut, Windham (United States) (160 m) call -

Many birds mobbing and scolding. Owl seen first, playback used later. Perched 30m away, high in deciduous tree. In addition to the prominent background species listed, others heard briefly are Contopus virens (Eastern Wood-Pewee), Pipilo erythrophthalmus (Eastern Towhee), likely Baeolophus bicolor (Tufted Titmouse) which could be the raspy scolding towards end of recording. Just before the final hoot, there is a tiny gap where I edited out some microphone cable noise.

Originally a Mystery Recording, thanks to XC contributors Dan Lane and Nathan Pieplow for helping identify & confirm the species as Northern Barred Owl.

Original post follows This owl woke me from sleep in my car when I heard it in my headphones. There was a Great Horned Owl flying around, hootin' it up earlier in the day (around 15:30!), so I know there was one in the area. I'm not familiar enough with owl calls to know that this was a GHO, though, so I thought I'd ask.

I'd upload a longer recording, but really, it was this lone, isolated call, with an hour of silence on either side before the next sound (some leaves falling)

Enjoy the reverb! There are some nice, tall conifers there.

Anyone know?
