Recordist trimmed ends and equipment setup sounds. Slight amplification utilizing Audacity SW. Mixed upland forest of old and second growth including oak, white pine, cottonwood, sumac et.al. Male BDOW in evergreen ~ 8 meters elevation, responding to distant BDOW (poss. other male in adjacent territory) mobbed by multiple passerines including NOCA, GRCA, et.al. BDOW calls open with 1 phrase inspection call then 2 phrase territorial and caterwauls. Equipment: Sony ICD-AX412.

Barred owl vocalizations heard in response to playback of a northern saw-whet owl recording. Recorded at a range of roughly 50 meters. The vocalizations were brief and stopped during this recording.

Habitat: mixed northern hardwood/boreal forest a few hundred meters from a large bog.

Equipment: Sony PCM-M10 and a Sennheiser ME67. Edits: trimmed and normalized to -3 dB.

Courtship between two Barred Owls, called dueting.

I had played the tape to myself, but thought it was too far away to be heard. It came in, though.

For the better part of two weeks and continuously throughout the day and night, a male and female Barred Owl were seen and heard frequently. If unfamiliar, the female has the higher pitched call. From what I understand these are descendants of other Barred Owls that have been on Samish Island for some time. This is actually a remarkable duet to hear and of course to experience.

It was just before 5:30 pm when this recording was made on a Zoom H4N. It was hand held with the cone handle in place. This is a mature wooded area.

Bird was right above me in a pine tree, pitch dark. There was also a juvenile heard later and potentially a second adult with it.

Two calls from single individual perched on short branch about 5 meters above ground. In forested habitat about 30 minutes east of Swan Lake Nature Center. After preening feathers for about 10 minutes, it stretched its tail feathers and gave a call, doing this twice before relaxing and shutting eyes.
