Poicephalus [robustus or fuscicollis] (= Poicephalus robustus) (Gmelin, JF 1788)

The Cape parrot or Levaillant's parrot is a large, temperate forest dwelling parrot of the genus Poicephalus endemic to South Africa. It was formerly grouped as a subspecies along with the savanna-dwelling brown-necked parrot and grey-headed parrot, but is now considered a distinct species. Source: Wikipedia

  • Poicephalus robustus: southern and eastern South Africa (Eastern Cape and southern KwaZulu-Natal; isolated population at Woodbush forest, Limpopo)
  • Poicephalus fuscicollis suahelicus: central Angola; southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Tanzania southward to Zimbabwe, northern Mozambique, and far northeastern South Africa; populations along the lower Congo River may be intermediate between Brown-necked Parrot (Brown-necked) Poicephalus robustus fuscicollis and Brown-necked Parrot (Gray-headed) Poicephalus robustus suahelicus
  • Poicephalus fuscicollis: disjunctly in lowland to montane riparian forest, miombo and mopane woodland, and wooded areas with baobabs or Borassus palms, from Senegambia eastward to east-central Nigeria, and southward to northwestern Angola and lower River Congo, and from eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, southwestern Uganda, and eastern Tanzania southward to southern Angola, northern Namibia and northeastern South Africa; post-breeding wandering
  • Poicephalus fuscicollis fuscicollis: Senegambia to Nigeria; populations along the lower Congo River may be intermediate between Brown-necked Parrot (Brown-necked) Poicephalus robustus fuscicollis and Brown-necked Parrot (Gray-headed) Poicephalus robustus suahelicus
