Bokmakierie - Telophorus zeylonus Rick Nuttall 2017-04-17 Bloemfontein, Motheo-distriksmunisipaliteit, Vrystaat, Bloemfontein (South Africa) (1400 m) Song in form of duet, song -

A duet between a sub-adult individual and an adult, the sub-adult learning to sing. The younger bird, which is not quite hitting the right notes yet, initiates the duet in the first part of the recording (e.g. just after 0:01 and just after 0:06), while the more experienced bird repeats the same part of the duet throughout, sometimes initiating (e.g. just after 0:10, just before 0:16, 0:35, 0:39, 0:43, 0:45, etc.), sometimes following (e.g. just after 0:01, just after 0:06, 0:25, 0:31, etc.). Note the younger bird again initiating the duet with two, harsher notes (just after 1:13, at 1:16). Not only does this record part of a song-learning process, but it also illustrates some of the variation, albeit brief, in the song of this species. The birds were singing while perched close to one another in the top of a 2.5 metre tall Buffalo thorn (Ziziphus mucronata) shrub growing in grassland behind houses. A distant pair of Bokmakieries may be heard duetting at 0:20, just after 0:22 and just after 0:28, etc. Recording modified slightly, using high pass and low pass filtering, as well as slight amplification.
