- Larus smithsonianus: breeds northern and western Alaska eastward across subarctic Canada to Baffin Island and Newfoundland, southward on Pacific coast to southern British Columbia, eastward to inland northeastern USA and Atlantic coast southward to North Carolina; winters from Aleutian Islands southward on Pacific coast to Nayarit (western Mexico), Gulf coast, and inland to Honduras and northern Caribbean
- Larus vegae: breeds Arctic central and eastern Siberia from Taymyr eastward to Chukotka, New Siberian Islands, and St. Lawrence Island (Bering Sea); winters mostly to rocky coasts of Japan, Korean Peninsula, and eastern China
- Larus mongolicus: breeds Altai Republic to Lake Baikal (south-central Russia) and Mongolia, Lake Khanka (Heilongjiang, northeastern China), and Yellow Sea islands (western Korean Peninsula); winters mostly to coastal wetlands of Japan, Korean Peninsula, eastern China, and Taiwan
