One section of the recording between the first and second calls has been silenced due to significant interference—length between calls not shortened however. Made with my mobile phone rather than the recorder.

I heard the montane resident NG subspecies excitus calling, and used tape of the nominate Australian birds which got a good response, eventually I had 3 individuals in the vicinity and was able to get both the trilled song and the plaintive anxiety calls. I believe Fan-tailed Cuckoo to comprise several species, with Fiji simus the most distinct with very distinct vocalisation (and a black morph, unknown elsewhere!), followed by New Caledonian pyrrhophanus, also vocally very different. This montane New Guinea one is a bit different but does respond to nominate birds, but being a montane resident I suspect it has been long isolated and some genetic work could be very informative.
