Fan-tailed Cuckoo - Cacomantis flabelliformis excitus Phil Gregory 2013-07-14 7 corners, near Tari Gap, Southern Highlands, Hela (Papua New Guinea) (2700 m) alarm call -

I heard the montane resident NG subspecies excitus calling, and used tape of the nominate Australian birds which got a good response, eventually I had 3 individuals in the vicinity and was able to get both the trilled song and the plaintive anxiety calls. I believe Fan-tailed Cuckoo to comprise several species, with Fiji simus the most distinct with very distinct vocalisation (and a black morph, unknown elsewhere!), followed by New Caledonian pyrrhophanus, also vocally very different. This montane New Guinea one is a bit different but does respond to nominate birds, but being a montane resident I suspect it has been long isolated and some genetic work could be very informative.

Very distinctive calls, quite unlike either nominate, excitus from New Guinea or simus from Fiji, clearly several species in this complex
