The great grey shrike is a large songbird species in the shrike family (Laniidae). It forms a superspecies with its parapatric southern relatives, the Iberian grey shrike, the Chinese grey shrike and the American loggerhead shrike. Males and females are similar in plumage, pearly grey above with a black eye-mask and white underparts. Source: Wikipedia

- Lanius excubitor: lowland to montane open areas, from tundra and taiga to steppe, semi-desert, and rocky desert, from Scandinavia and France eastward to western Siberia, Caucasus, and Mongolia, and southward to Canary Islands, northern Africa, Arabia, Socotra, and India; many populations move downslope in winter or migrate to lowland Europe, Middle East, or southern India
- Lanius excubitor excubitor: breeds western and northern Europe eastward to western Siberia; winters to Türkiye and the Caucasus
- Lanius excubitor homeyeri: Balkan Peninsula to southern Ural Mountains and western Siberia
- Lanius excubitor leucopterus: western Siberia to Yenisey River
- Lanius excubitor elegans: northern Sahara (Mauritania to Sinai Peninsula and Red Sea)
- Lanius excubitor algeriensis: Morocco (north of Atlas Mountains), coastal northern Algeria, and Tunisia
- Lanius excubitor koenigi: central and eastern Canary Islands
- Lanius excubitor leucopygos: southern Sahara and Sahel from Mauritania to western and central Sudan
- Lanius excubitor aucheri: eastern Sudan southward to northern Somalia; southern Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, and Arabian Peninsula eastward to Iran
