Same individual as in previous recording, this recording after a short playback, bird flew to a closer perch. Very odd 'mechanical' sound well heard in the second and the last song. Sort of sounds like a wing-whirr, but nothing in the literature mentions this or ANY non-vocal sounds. In perfect time with the trill. Maybe the perch (top of a thin snag) was a loose bit of wood and vibrated as the bird gave it's energetic trill?? I am stumped.

Despite being closer to the Sparrow than the Goldfinches, the Sparrow's song came in slightly less clear. Nevertheless, today was an exciting day simply because of sighting not only this individual, but a few others as well. So far this year, Black-chinned Sparrows have only been reported in Laguna, but today, I saw at least four, and this location- as far as I know- is only visited by me for the purpose of bird-watching and submitting eBird checklists. Additionally, previous observations of Black-chinned Sparrows in San Diego County infrequently reach this far west.

Weather conditions: clear, Beaufort 2, 76 F. Adult feeding begging fledgling in chamise. Adult call is the high 'teet', and the juvenile begging call is the raspy 'zee-zee', 'zeet-zeezee', and other variations.
