Location is approximate. Song of bird on edge of steep slope with many smooth granite boulders and scattered trees. Calling strongly for short period from c20 mins after local sunset, hence just before really dark.

Montane Nightjar, a nocturnal bird that likes sitting on electric transmission cables and high up on trees about 8m high. Sings continuously for several minutes at intervals of some hours throughout the night. Identified for me by Ornithologist, Dr. Peter Njoroge.

Location is approximate. Bird singing; one of a number in area of granite boulders and trees. This bird had come in close to playback and hovered overhead before settling nearby to sing.

Song given whilst perched on post in hotel garden, on at top of steep slope. Same bird as featured in  XC474293,  XC474295 and  XC474296. This bird put on a stunning display for three consecutive nights, being approachable down to c5 feet as he intermittently sang and hunted from a 6-7 foot high, bare metal post in the small hotel garden above the cliff. The bird was mainly present from just after dusk to c2100 but at least once returned and resumed singing in the early hours of the morning.

Natural vocalizations from single individual flying overhead. Several individuals flew along the crater hillside close to the lodge every evening at twilight, and occasionally perched in nearby trees. Called only when flying overhead.

Acacia/Balanites scrub habitat. Bird was perched on top of a Balanites tree 5 m high and 35 m away.
